The kitchen that feeds the City all year turns its hand to Christmas from November, and it does it properly. A festive three-course menu built around roasted turkey, smoked honey gammon, herb-crusted salmon, and a mushroom wellington that holds its own against the lot. Puddings range from Basque cheesecake with Cornish clotted cream to a decadent white chocolate and raspberry panna cotta and a classic sticky toffee pudding.

Thursdays at The Flying Horse mean live music from 8.30pm, and a bar that is set up for an evening that earns its length. The kitchen runs until 9pm with British pub classics and stone-baked pizza. In a single-room pub on the corner of Wilson Street since 1812, the sound carries well. Well enough that by 9pm the corner outside has its own crowd. Four minutes from Moorgate, five from Liverpool Street.
